Transitioning from Coal: Exploring Sustainable Energy Alternatives in South Africa

Coal has historically dominated global electricity production, making up over 35% of power generation in 2022 and emitting a hefty 950g of carbon dioxide per kilowatt-hour. In South Africa, where more than 60% of electricity comes from coal-fired power stations, this reliance results in an alarming average emission of 4.4 tons of CO2 per household annually. But, amidst this troubling scenario, a glimmer of hope emerges as the International Energy Agency (IEA) anticipates a gradual decline in global coal use at a rate of 1.7% per year.

As the world hustles to decrease its dependence on coal, especially in South Africa, where coal plays a major role in power generation, there’s a pressing need to identify alternative energy sources. Two big contenders in the South African context are Natural Gas and Solar Energy. Below we present a brief overview of both options.

Natural Gas 

Natural gas, known for its cleaner energy profile, emits 350g of CO2 per kWh of electricity produced. Globally, it made up 22.7% of power generation in 2022, with the IEA projecting a 1% annual increase. South Africa boasts local suppliers like SASOL and RENERGEN, the latter holding the “First and only onshore petroleum production right in South Africa” and confirming renewable natural gas reserves at its Virginia Project. Shifting towards natural gas-fired power stations could tackle environmental concerns while getting an economic boost from local suppliers.

Solar Energy

The renewable energy sector, which is set to outperform coal globally by 2025, puts solar power in the spotlight. In 2022, renewables (in particular from solar panels) made up 30% of total global electricity generation, and the IEA projects a 1.3% annual increase, reaching a 37% share in the next 24 months. Solar energy’s environmental charm lies in its zero carbon dioxide emissions during operation, making it an eco-friendly choice. Beyond its green perks, solar power adds value to properties and is encouraged by the South African government with enticing tax rebates, making it a sweet deal for both homeowners and energy producers.

As South Africa maneuvers through the challenges of kicking the coal habit, exploring sustainable alternatives becomes crucial. Blending the growth potential of natural gas and solar energy can easily fill the gap left by the decline in coal use, all while significantly slashing carbon emissions. The choices between natural gas and solar energy hold exciting promise, paving the way for a more eco-conscious and economically sound energy future for the nation.
